Visit Shibden Hall – home of Anne Lister where you can see the costumes of Gentleman Jack, including new items added to the collection last year. In addition, especially for September, Shibden is showing the Codification of Stitch by Royal School of Needlework trained embroiderer Charlotte Farrant.
Charlotte states that: ‘Inspired by Anne Lister’s life, the Codification of Stitch highlights the most significant achievements of Anne’s life in both illustrative and coded form.'
The Gentleman Jack costumes are on display at Shibden Hall from 25th July to 4th October 2026. Codification of Stitch by Charlotte Farrant runs from 3rd to 27th September 2026.

Streets in the Sky Tours

Did you know that above Halifax Borough Market there are two ‘secret’ streets? Discover them with Visit Calderdale’s ‘Streets in the Sky’ guided tours!
On these tours you’ll explore the unique architecture of the Grade II* listed Halifax Borough Market, learn about its history, visit both of the Market balcony ‘Streets in the Sky,’ where the houses are still used by the businesses below and some are still occupied; and get an exclusive look inside one of the uninhabited houses.
Afterwards you can shop and enjoy food and drink at the locally owned independent cafes and delis in the Market.

A formal memorial service at Halifax Minster to remember Anne Lister and to celebrate her legacy. The service will involve members of the Anne Lister community, and be led by Revd Sam Crook.

Poetry Workshop

Join poet Christine Sanders for a fantastic day doing what Anne Lister did best - write! In a relaxed, positive and encouraging atmosphere, you will be guided to write poetry/prose in the form of a dramatic monologue. The focus will be on the relationship of Anne Lister and Ann Walker.
This workshop is perfect whether you are just putting pen to paper or a published writer. Be like Anne - walk her floorboards, be where Anne and Ann were, these walls saw it all.
Bring lunch, a laptop (if you wish), everything else is provided including biscuits.
Please note: this workshop will be held upstairs on the first floor at Shibden Hall. Please email Museums@calderdale.gov.uk to discuss access requirements.

Flower Laying at the Sculpture of Anne Lister

Join the Anne Lister community and others at the Anne Lister sculpture to remember Anne on the 184th anniversary of her death. ‘Petals of Grace’ flower seller will be on site in the courtyard for you to purchase flowers. (Please lay unwrapped or cellophane-free flowers only).

Anne Lister Community Bring-your-own picnic

Community picnic in the grounds of Shibden Park: bring your own food and drinks and have a good catch up with friends old and new! This will take place in the grounds of Shibden Park.

Halifax Minster - the 900-year-old building that was such an important part of Anne Lister’s life and is where she was baptised, worshipped and is buried, will be open from 12-4pm for quiet reflection during the period. Check Minster website to confirm opening times/for further detail.
Shibden Hall - Anne Lister’s former home, will be open daily. Mon-Fri 10am-5pm. Sat, Sun 11am-5pm. Check website to confirm opening times and entry fee.
ALHQ, aka the Anne Lister Hub, Unit 2, Northgate House, Halifax, HX1 1UR (next to Hatch Brunch House) will be open throughout the weekend for more information, and to buy merch!
